Synopsis & Opening Comments

“In this prison, death is the main attraction. Ganta is the only survivor after a mysterious man in red slaughters a classroom full of teenagers. He’s framed for the carnage, sentenced to die, and locked away in the most twisted prison ever built: Deadman Wonderland. Then it gets worse.

At Deadman Wonderland, convicts are forced into brutal death matches for the amusement of the masses, the cheers of the crowd drowning out the screams of the dismembered. Even when Ganta befriends Shiro, an unusual female inmate, his dark fate crushes all hope – until he discovers a strange ability to wield his spilled blood as a weapon. Ganta learns his new skill might be related to the murderous man in red and uncovers disturbing secrets that could expose those who stole his freedom. He’s determined to see justice served – but first he’ll have to fight for his life in a prison that holds a million ways to die.”

Watching Deadman Wonderland was like a journey. A journey to discover how sadistic an anime can really be; but that is just a minor part of this journey. You will discover how intense action and gore can get throughout the walls of Deadman Wonderland. You will meet interesting characters which give off that “Its not all over” vibe.

What is it that makes Deadman Wonderland so appealing? Is it the unique story? Could it be the mind-boggling characters? Or could it be the sheer gore-filled action?

Deadman Wonderland takes place in a prison that is open to the public, why is it open to the public? Mainly because it is also an Amusement Park. The inmates at the prison are also used as spectacles for the public to view when they take part in “games” where their lives are on the line. When Ganta is framed for the mass-murder of everyone in his class by a man clothed in red. He is then sentenced to death at Deadman Wonderland. Although at Deadman Wonderland they have their own plans in mind for him.

Ganta’s body is being injected by poison that will eventually kill him; but the only way to stop that is to eat a candy that will sustain his condition every 3 days. As a death row inmate Ganta is well known among the prison for being scum, almost everyone wants a piece of him. Early on in the story Ganta is all alone, until he meets a girl by the name of Shiro who saves his life. At this point she seems to know who he is but he has absolutely no idea about her. She almost seems like a bother to Ganta but quite frankly without her, he would simply be dead.

After a few episodes Ganta begins to settle in to the hell-hole that is Deadman Wonderland. Until once again the Red Man reveals himself in the prison, killing many people; Ganta is infuriated at the site of him and begins to use a weird power where he is able to form his own spilled-blood into a weapon. He then uses this mysterious power to drive away the Red Man. Ganta, Shiro and Ganta’s cellmate Yo Tamaki, decide to go down to the “G Block”, which according to the inmates does not exist. The reason for this venture is because Ganta is raring to get his hands on the Red Man; upon arrival they are quickly put in their place by the Security Robot, although Shiro then proceeds to take it out with one hit.

Out of nowhere arrives Senji, the first Deadman; a Deadman is an inmate that can wield their own blood much like Ganta. Senji then begins to go on about how he will fight Ganta now but he must fight him again the following day in what is known as Carnival of Corpses; An event where Deadmen are put up against eachother in a battle to the death.

As a whole the story has a bit of a slow start but I think that is mainly so we feel the full extent of the unveiling’s later on. There isn’t really any part of the story that I felt disappointed in really, it is a solid story that will attract any Hardcore anime fan or even those who are looking for a good mature start. I hope your not squeamish because this is a gore filled thriller!

Now along with the solid story you would expect even more sustainable characters right? Well that is where you would be wrong. Now I am not saying in any way that the characters suck, because they are far from sucking, they just lack a little.

Take Ganta for example, he may be our main character but he is also a coward. I hate a character that cannot stand up for himself, and you see throughout this anime that he needs a girl to fight his battles.

Shiro on the other hand is everything that I adore about a female character, she is strong willed and has a great personality. Unfortunately she is a complete dunce, she has no common sense whatsoever so she will just do what she believes is right.

Now I can compare these 2 characters to their mirror image, and that would be the 2 leads out of Mirai Nikki. Ganta is your typical Yukiteru, a character that cannot fight for himself and is always shying away from responsibility. Shiro is your Gasai Yuno, obsessed with the lead and always there to protect them as they wont protect themselves.

Now this is a real Gore-fest. I was pleasantly surprised to see so much red. I just thought the way they utilized the blood as weapons was artistic because the way the Branches of Sin looked is absolutely awesome!

Apart from having red everywhere this is also well drawn and animated. The characters look just as their profile would describe them; take Senji for example, the buff, scary looking guy who frightens the hell out of people looks exactly how I would of pictured him.

There isn’t really much to say about the art because it is pleasant and it is also easier to just show you what I mean, so take a look at all the screenshots in this Review!

Why not watch the trailer before hearing my close?

Closing Comments

As I said in the beginning, Deadman Wonderland is a journey, one that will take you to the deepest depths of darkness; do you think you could endure it?

Such a brilliant anime that defines the phrase “action-packed”, I would suggest you add this to your collection because it is worth every penny spent.

This is a brilliant review! I absolutely loved Deadman Wonderland and hope there will be a second series. The animation is great, especially the “bloooooood” and gore!
